Story Time-A Love Hate Relationship

I have such a love/hate relationship with story time at my local library. On one hand, it's something for the girls to do and it's free. We get to listen to fun stories, sing nursery rhymes, and do simple crafts (now that Sophie and Hannah have moved up to the toddler group). But I also like that it teaches them how to sit still and be good listeners. Ha!

My first story time was a huge disaster. I took almost an entire year to for me to get up the nerve to give it another shot.

Sophie and Hannah always start off great. They sit and listen quietly. By the time the second book starts, someone (Hannah) starts getting ants in the pants. She stands up, looks over at me and tries to casually walk away. Casually walk away and...play with the (covered) outlet. Casually walk away and...stand on another mom's diaper bag. And so on. The thing is even when they're being good, I'm still a nervous wreck waiting for the inevitable. I know what's going to happen. It's just a matter of when. Actually Sophie is fine. She sits quietly up front and participates. The problem is when Hannah starts to act up, Sophie wants to join in. They egg each other on. It's a twin thing.

Today's disaster happened after story time. I was getting ready to check out some books when Hannah ran off, pressed the handicapped button on the door (she figured these out a long time ago) and tried to run outside. I ran after her and grabbed her arm just as she reached the door. As I was bringing her back inside, a woman ran over to me.

Our conversation went something like this:

Lady: You buzzed.
Me (as I was dragging Hannah back inside): What?!
Lady: You buzzed.

Me giving the lady a strange look and wondering if the handicapped button makes a buzzing noise.

Lady: You buzzed. Can I see your books?

Oh, apparently in my quest to keep my daughter from running outside and into the street, I had not stopped to check out all my library books. And even though the librarian wasn't rude, she wasn't super understanding. She was focused entirely on the books. No sympathetic "Oh, you've got your hands full." Or even a simple "Can I help?" Nothing. Not even when we got the books sorted out did she offer to simply hold the door open for me. So thank you Golden Library. Thank you.

And here is a cute moment that makes it all worth it.
Needless to say I will be back again next week.
